We know your time on our campus is important. Our goal is to help you reach the greatest number of students during each visit. To generate interest in your organization and have meaningful conversations with UToledo engineering students, we invite you to consider these ideas as you make plans to attend a UToledo Engineering Career EXPO:
- Post your position(s) in our online recruitment system, GradLeaders, prior to the Fair. Include a note inviting students to visit you at your booth at the Fair.
- Advertise the event. A few days/weeks before the career fair, put the word out that your company is hiring and participating in the event. Post details on your social media pages. Students who are familiar with your brand or would like to learn about you will know which booth to visit. Note that if you’re participating in a closed event, like a career fair, you likely can’t invite people. However, you can still advertise on social media to let attendees know where to look for you. Also, consider posting pictures while you’re there, to build your brand.
- You want to make a good first impression, so make sure whoever is staffing the booth is fully informed and prepared to talk with students about (1) your organization, (2) the position(s) you’re recruiting for, and (3) your hiring procedures/policies.
- Consider sending employees who are UToledo alums and/or current UToledo students co-oping at your organization to the Fair.
- Be sure to be set up on-time, provide interesting giveaways, an exciting display, and an engaging staff are the best way to generate interest among candidates.
- If you are unable to accept resumes at the Fair, you’ll want to be able to explain (1) why, (2) what the alternate application procedures are, and (3) why it’s still beneficial that students talked with you at the Fair. Many students seem to question the value of attending these events if they’re repeatedly told to “just apply on our website” and supplying this information is a great way to build and maintain relationships with candidates.
- Don't wait for candidates to approach you - Be assertive, friendly and sincere. The best way to welcome potential new employees is to stand, do not sit at your exhibit. Consider asking open-ended, yet specific questions (i.e., “Are you interested in an IT career with the country’s leading software manufacturer?”). Avoid the “hard sell” and consider a softer, informative style.
- Act fast, you came to the event to a make a hire, and the best way to do that is to act quickly If you find a candidate you really like, invite them back for same day interviews at your booth in Savage Arena.
- Be prepared to talk to all students. Many freshmen volunteers will attend the Career Fair. Interacting with these students is a long-term investment in your recruiting process. Taking time to explain career opportunities to these students now may produce dividends in the future when the student is seeking their first co-op. They will remember the employer with whom they connected as a younger student.
- After the Fair, respond to all inquiries personally ASAP to reinforce your brand. Shortening the hiring process is the best strategy for getting good candidates through the door.
