    Sandberg Literacy Institute: Motivating Reluctant Readers and Writers

    This year’s theme:  Motivating Reluctant Readers and Writers

    Speakers and workshops led by children’s book authors and illustrators as well as leading experts in the literacy field:

    June 16               Elizabeth Moje  (Focus:  Motivating urban adolescents)

    June 17               Marsha Wilson Chall (author e.g., Prairie Train & Sugarbush Spring)

    June 18               James Bruchac (author, e.g. The Girl Who Helped Thunder)

    June 19               Jane Kurtz (author, e.g., Saba: Under the Hyena’s Foot)

    June 20               Jerzy Drozd (graphic novelist, Make Like A Tree Comics)

    June 23               Rebecca Wheeler (Focus:  teaching code-switching)

    June 24               Yansook Choi (author/illustrator, e.g., The Name Jar )

    June 25               Jeffrey Stone (author/illustrator, e.g., The Five Ancestors Series)

    June 26               Patricia Edwards (Focus: Working with parents of reluctant readers)

    June 27               Wong Herbert Yee (author/illustrator, e.g., Fireman Small)


    3-credits at graduate or undergraduate level (CI 4/5390) or attend a la carte!

    All about Registering for the Sandberg Literacy Institute - Graduate Credits, Undergraduate Credits, or a la carte

    University of Toledo Students - be sure to register before the May 11 deadline; go to MyUT.

    If you are not a University of Toledo student and would like to take this class for credit, you may want to enroll as an undergraduate.  In this situation, you may want to contact the admissions office about enrolling as an UWD (Undergraduate With Degree).   For more information on this option, contact the Admissions Office at 419-530-8888.

    If you want to enroll for 3 graduate credits and are not already in a degree program here at the University of Toledo, contact the Graduate School and obtain "special student status."

    You also have the option of on-site registration the first day of the institute at Scott Park.  Special parking permits will also be available for $18.00.

    To attend the institute a la carte, the cost is $10 per day for UT students.  For others, the charge will be $30 per day.  Interested parties need to RSVP to one of the co-directors.
