Undergraduate International Admission

After You're Admitted - Next steps

I-20 and Visa Process

1. Receiving form I-20

Students coming from outside of the United States:

In order to start your student visa (F1) application to come to the United States, you need to obtain Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status”. We prepare I-20 documents for international students who have accepted an offer of admission.

To obtain I-20 form from The University of Toledo, you need to submit the following documents to international@utoledo.edu :

  • Copy of the ID page of passport (issued by your government and acceptable for international travel);
  • Financial Affidavit. Proof of enough financial resources to cover the cost of study at The University of Toledo and living in the United States for at least one full year (e.g. bank letter). The exact amount to demonstrate was emailed to you from our office with your admission and scholarship letters. Bank letters must be dated within 30 days of submission.
  • Sponsor letter, if the financial documents you provide are not in your name.
  • Additional requirement to make $7,500 USD deposit with The University of Toledo for applicants coming from the following countries and regions:
    • Bangladesh
    • Ethiopia
    • Pakistan
    • Uzbekistan
    • India - only the regions of Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir.

The I-20 will be emailed to you as a PDF once we have received all required supporting documentation.

Students already in the United States:

If you currently have an active SEVIS record and are inside the U.S., submit the Transfer In form through International Rocket Portal.

2. Applying for student visa

If you are coming to the United States with the primary purpose of enrolling full time in an undergraduate program at The University of Toledo, you will need to get a visa from the United States Embassy/Consulate to enter the United States.

To apply for a visa, visit the website of the nearest United States Embassy/Consulate for F1 visa application details. You will need:

  • Your passport
  • Your Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20)
  • Proof of adequate financial support for your studies and living expenses
  • Your letter of admission to UToledo
  • Proof of payment of the SEVIS (Student Exchange Visitor Information System) fee

You must complete form I-901 to pay the SEVIS fee to the Department of Homeland Security prior to your student visa interview. The U.S. Embassy/Consulate will have the latest SEVIS fee information.

Our office offers information sessions focusing on visa interview preparation for students who have received their form I-20.

Students coming directly from another county on a student visa (F-1 or J-1) are limited to entering the United States no earlier than 30 days before their I-20 start date. Students already in school in the U.S. are not subject to this requirement.

Undergraduate-level students with visas must be full-time students, registered for at least 12 credit hours per semester (this is typically equal to 4 lecture or seminar-type classes).
