Michael Brooks, Ph.D. Student
Michael Brooks has research interests in the roles of epidemic disease in history as well as the history of the colonial Atlantic. He received his Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Toledo in 2004, graduating with departmental and University honors. He received first place in both the Shapiro Essay Contest and the Dean’s Essay Prize at UT in 2004. He completed his Master's thesis in 2006 at UT, and is enrolled in the doctoral program at the university, concentrating on European Expansion and Imperial Russia. He was awarded a University of Toledo Graduate Fellowship in 2007, renewable for three years.
As an active freelance journalist, Michael's work has been published in a wide variety of local and national periodicals. He won back-to-back Touchstone Awards in 2004 and 2005 for his work as a reporter for Toledo newspapers, and won an honorable mention for his coverage of the 15 October 2005 North Toledo riot.
Michael has had several peer-reviewed articles published in academic journals, and has a chapter in an upcoming anthology on indigenous peoples of North America. His website, http://www.historymike.blogspot.com, has won numerous web awards, and has been featured on Salon.com, MSNBC, and CBS.com.
Michael lives in Toledo with his wife, seven children, and a his three adopted dogs.
