Criteria for Admission and Retention

Criteria for Admission and Retention:
Music Education Program
Department of Music, University of Toledo

Entry to first year:

  • Audition and acceptance as a music major
  • Acceptance in the College of Education

30 hours of work with school-age students must be documented when applying for admission to professional education.  Plan to volunteer or work for pay during your first two years.

At entry to second year you should have

  • completed of 2 semesters of Music Theory/Sight Singing with a grade of C or better in each
  • an overall GPA of 2.5
  • earned Level three or better in Applied Study (must be working toward Level 4)
  • membership in music education professional organization, OCMEA which includes membership in MENC (and throughout degree)

During second year:

  • Must take and pass (minimum 172 paper/pencil; TBA computer version) the PPST. Register on your own; scores must be available no later than semester 4 (or one semester prior to enrolling in EDP 3200)
  • 45 hours of course work must be successfully completed after 4 semesters as a student
  • EDP 3200 taken in semester 5
  • Overall GPA of 2.5 or better, Music GPA of 2.7 or better (this average must include a grade of C or better in each Music Theory and Music History course, and in MED 3000, Foundations)
  • Successful completion of all portions of the Music Teaching Competency Exam
  • Earn level 4 or better in Applied Study

Acceptance into Professional Education requires:

  • Completion of 4 semesters of Music Theory/Sight Singing with a grade of C or better in each
  • Overall GPA of 2.5 or better, Music GPA of 2.7 or better (this average must include a grade of C or better in each Music Theory and Music History course, and in MED 3000, Foundations)
  • Application to Professional Education paperwork (is begun only upon successful completion of the Music Teaching Competency Exam)
  • Completion of ENGL 1110 &1130 or higher, MATH 1180 or higher, and 3 additional general studies requirements
  • Documentation of 30 hours prior experience in schools or other agencies with appropriate school-age population.
  • Acceptance to Professional Education is required to enroll in MED3300, MED3310, MED3320, EDP3230, SPED4020, and Student Teaching/Student Teaching Seminar.
  • Acceptance requires successful completion of all requirements outlined in Overall GPA of 2.5 or better, Music GPA of 2.7 or better (this average must include a grade of C or better in each Music Theory and Music History course, and in MED 3000, Foundations)
  • Documentation that all previously listed requirements have been met.

Entry to Student Teaching Requires:

  • Overall GPA of 2.7
  • Minimum grade of C or better in all techniques, conducting, and methods classes
  • Overall GPA of 2.7 in all techniques, conducting, and methods classes
  • Teaching proficiency demonstration in lab ensemble upon completion of all techniques, conducting, and methods classes, and all required course work in the College of Education
  • Completion of all required College of Education course work, music, and music education course work (and at least 90% of  all degree course work)
  • Completion of all concert and recital attendance requirements (departmental and non-departmental)
  • Senior recital given, minimum level 6

GPA at graduation must be a minimum of 2.7
