MBA Concentrations

Every student in the MBA program must complete at least three electives as part of their curriculum. By completing three electives in one functional area, a student is awarded a concentration in that area. However, if you are interested in "cherry-picking" electives from several different areas, you are welcome to do so and will be considered as an MBA student with a concentration in General Administration.

These are the current concentrations for MBA students beginning their program in the fall of 2008:

  • Administration
  • Finance
  • Human Resource Management
  • Information Systems
  • International Business
  • Leadership
  • Marketing (three separate tracks):
    • Marketing Management
    • Professional Sales
    • CRM and Marketing Intelligence
  • Operations and Supply Chain Management
  • Technological Entrepreneurship

The Leadership and Technological Entrepreneurship concentrations are *NEW* for the fall of 2008. The Sales concentration is the first AACSB-accredited Sales concentration in the country at the graduate level, and builds on the success of the nationally-recognized Ed Schmidt School of Professional Sales within the College of Business Administration.

Areas of Specialization - please note: this information is subject to change at any time. Current students should check with the MBA adviser to ensure that they are following the correct sequence of elective courses to earn their intended concentration. All of this information can also be found in the University Catalog at http://catalog.utoledo.edu.

Administration
The administration specialization is designed for students who want a general degree. Please select any three graduate-level electives within the college for which prerequisites have been fulfilled.

Finance
The graduate finance curriculum provides students with a background in all major areas of finance including corporate finance, investments and portfolio management, and financial institutions and markets. The prerequisite for all 6000-level finance courses is FINA 5310 or the equivalent undergraduate material. A student who wants to specialize in finance will take FINA 6130 Managerial Finance, plus two from the following list:

Students are required to successfully complete HURM 6700 Human Resource Management, or its equivalent, by completing either an undergraduate degree in human resource management from an AACSB-accredited school, or by certification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI).
