Annual Events

Lunar New Year Carnival (Free)

Get ready to celebrate the Lunar New Year in style with the fun-filled carnival organized by CISP! With activities ranging from kite-making to tea-tasting and various games, this event is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in different cultural traditions. Plus, indulge in free, mouth-watering Chinese cuisine. Don't miss out on this exciting event that brings together students from all walks of life to celebrate the start of a new year.

International dinner $ 

International Dinner (I-Dinner), organized by ISA (International Students Association), is an incredible opportunity to explore different cultures through food and entertainment. Students can indulge in delicious dishes from all over the world and enjoy various performances such as music, dance, poetry, and skits that showcase the unique talents and traditions of our student body. With dazzling decorations and a lively atmosphere, this event is a celebration of diversity that you won't want to miss.

Song fest dance team

Song fest brings together various Greek life organizations and independent groups to showcase their slick moves in a dance competition. But wait, there is more! If you are looking to add a unique twist to your dance routine and want to join an international organization, then look no further than ISA! This fantastic org showcases a range of cultural dances from around the world, and you can be a part of it too! So, dust off those dancing shoes and get ready to show off your moves alongside Rockets from all walks of life at Song Fest!

Holi Toledo! (Free)

Get ready to add some color to your life at HOLI Toledo, the most vibrant event on campus, organized by ISCO (Indian Students Cultural Organization)! This event celebrates the ancient Hindu tradition of Holi, also known as the festival of colors. From the moment you arrive, you'll be immersed in a world of multicolored hues and joyous celebrations. You will get the chance to throw beautiful colors and create a colorful, memorable, and exciting memories with your friends and fellow rockets.

African Night $ 

With a lively and electrifying atmosphere, this event is the perfect opportunity to experience the diverse cultures and traditions of different African countries. When it comes to food, get ready for a feast of delicious African cuisine! From mouth-watering stews to spicy rice dishes, every bite will excite your taste buds and leave you craving for more.

Toledo Sister Cities International Festival

Ever wondered what a Toledo sister cities event looks like? Well, you’re in luck because the city of Toledo hosts one annually. The event will have member from Toledo sister cities all around the world. Toledo has 13 sister cities all around the world, and all will gather for the international festival to watch different cultural dances, have drinks, and eat at multiple food trucks. If you are in Toledo in the summer, then this is an event you do not want to miss.

International festival: Islamic center

The Islamic Center of Greater Toledo holds a festival every year that attracts thousands of people to the center. Featuring over 22 ethnicities under one tent, the International Festival is one of the most diverse cultural experiences offered in Ohio. Over 100 different styles of food are served, a multi-cultural shopping bazaar and activities for the kids make this a family event. With tours of the center and our multi-cultural exhibit, this is the event to attend to get a first-hand experience of Islam in America.

Homecoming Parade and Tailgate (Free)

Gear up for the most exciting campus event of the year, the Rocket Parade! This annual event brings together UToledo's best and brightest, with floats, dignitaries, alumni, the Rocket Marching Band, and of course, Rocky and Rocksy, parading through the streets of Old Orchard. But the fun doesn't stop there; as a student, you have the chance to represent your country by joining the parade with the Center for International Studies and Programs (CISP). Imagine proudly waving your national flag and showcasing your cultural attire while marching alongside your fellow Rockets. The Rocket Parade is the perfect opportunity to show off your school spirit and cultural pride, while also enjoying a truly unforgettable experience. And also join us for our international tailgate party outside Snyder Memorial where we will have food, games, drinks and music.

Diya $ 

Get ready to immerse yourself in a dazzling celebration of Diwali, courtesy of ISCO (Indian Students Cultural Organization)! This event is the perfect opportunity to experience the lively colors, sounds, and flavors of India, all in one place. You'll be treated to jaw-dropping cultural and Bollywood-style dance performances that will have you tapping your feet and swaying to the rhythm. And when it comes to food, be prepared to indulge in a feast of delicious Indian cuisines that will leave your taste buds tingling with delight. With so much excitement and energy in the air, this is an event you definitely don't want to miss!

I-Halloween (Free)

Get ready to scream and satisfy your sweet tooth at the spookiest event on campus - I-Halloween, organized by ISA! With over 15 countries represented, this event is a feast for the senses that you won't want to miss. Thanksgiving Dinner

Get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving like a true U.S. American with an exciting event designed specifically for international students! This is your chance to experience this traditional U.S. American holiday in a unique and unforgettable way. Picture yourself gathered around a table, surrounded by friendly faces and the delicious aromas of classic Thanksgiving dishes like turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. You'll have the chance to learn more about the origins and customs of this holiday from your gracious hosts and share your own cultural traditions. Not only is this event a great way to experience Thanksgiving in a unique and memorable way, but it's also an opportunity to immerse yourself in U.S. American culture and learn first-hand about the customs, values, and way of life in the United States.

Study Abroad

English Corner

English Corner is a fun, free, informal weekly time of tutoring for international students who would like to improve their conversational English skills.  It is open to any international person who wants to attend, including spouses of students, Owens Community College students, and other residents of the greater Toledo area. The topics are unique to each class, so you can attend as many English Corner classes as you like. We practice everyday conversation, pronunciation and speaking skills using a variety of topics and fun exercises.

Conversation Partners

Serving the American Language Institute at The University of Toledo, the Conversation Partners program is designed to link U.S. English speakers with ALI students to help international students improve their English conversation skills.  It also helps to develop cross-cultural understanding and friendship.  The partnership commitment is for one semester, although it can continue longer. The U.S. and the international student agree to meet each week for an hour.

Hospitality Program

The Toledo International Hospitality Program (TIHP) exists to promote friendship and cultural exchange between Toledo residents and international students from The University of Toledo.  Individuals and families from the community are matched with students from all over the world, and they agree to get together about once a month.  The year begins in the fall with the initial Harvest Party.

International Education Week

Is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of our efforts to promote programs that prepare U.S. Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States.

Rocket Kids 

Rocket Kids is a newly designed youth work program housed in the Judith Herb College of Education providing educational development and recreational programming to the United States Army’s children and youth in Europe. Rocket Kids interns can participate in a fall, spring or summer term and provide services to our U.S. military youth while experiencing the world in locations such as Germany, Italy, Belgium, and Netherlands! If you are a U.S. citizen enrolled at a U.S. college or university, you may be eligible.  Don’t wait; apply today!

Apply for the Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion group-based program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad during summer time studying one of 14 critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.

FULBRIGHT STUDENT PROGRAM 

Teach, study, and research abroad!  Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides awards for activities abroad such as teaching English, study and research.  Awards are given for undergraduates and graduates in many disciplines in programs in various countries.

Choose a class project that is international related  

If you're eager to learn about different cultures but don't have the time to join international organizations or attend events, we've got a perfect solution for you. Why not dedicate a class project or paper to a different country and immerse yourself in its unique culture? Many students have already taken this approach and have written fascinating papers and conducted insightful research on specific countries. And guess what? This can ignite your curiosity and draw you even closer to the country's culture! By contacting the International Students Association (ISA), you can even be paired with a student from that country, giving you the opportunity to learn firsthand and exchange cultural experiences. So why not make your academic journey a cultural adventure? 


Collaborate with an International organization 

Are you already involved in various organizations on campus, looking for a new challenge and wanting to make even more connections? Why not reach out to one of the 10 + international organizations on campus and collaborate with them? With a membership of over 500 students, these groups offer a unique opportunity to engage with domestic and international students alike. Learn a Foreign language 

Hey Rockets! Are you looking to expand your worldview and gain new experiences? Learning another language and culture is a fantastic way to do just that! And here at UToledo, we've got you covered. Our Department of World Languages and Cultures offers a range of language options including Spanish, French, Arabic, Japanese, and German.

But wait, there's more! We've partnered with Yanshan University to offer an exciting Mandarin language program where college instructors all the way from China come and teach on campus. And the best part? All of our language programs are absolutely free to UToledo students!

  • First, attend different events organized by international organizations, as these provide a perfect opportunity to meet people from all over the world.  
  • Second, follow international organizations social media account on campus to stay up to date on their events and activities.  
  • Third, try to team up with an international student on group projects in your classes. Not only will you learn about their unique perspective, but you'll also make a new friend.  
  •  Finally, why not join different language classes? Here you'll be exposed to international students who are learning the language and may be eager to make a new friend too. So, get out there, and start building your global network!
