About Us

Message from the Administrative Director

Welcome to The University of Toledo’s Division of eLearning and Academic Support. When you enroll in distance learning courses, you join over 3.2 million students doing so nationwide. UT will enroll more than 12,000 students in over 900 courses this year. Distance learning courses are taught by faculty who care deeply about your learning experience.

The University’s online courses give students in Ohio and beyond the opportunity to participate in UT’s world class education and take courses from a variety of discipline areas. Our focus is to enrich your educational experience. We bring UT’s tradition of learning to the student, preparing you to compete in today’s work place.

At UT, distance learning (DL) is defined as a course offered via technology (web, CD-ROM, ISDN lines, IP Video) that connects student and instructor for at least 70% of the course interaction and content. Our online courses are offered utilizing Blackboard course management software. Most of the DL courses are offered fully online in the virtual classroom and are taught by the UT’s tenured faculty. Student learning is assessed in a variety of ways: through online discussion participation, assignments and term papers that are emailed to faculty, as well as through traditional multiple choice, short answer and essay examinations. Some DL courses may require that examinations be proctored, in which case, the eLearning staff will be glad to help with these arrangements in your geographical area.

In addition to online courses, UT offers hundreds of web assisted course sections designed to enhance learning. A web assisted (WA) course is taught in the traditional (face to face) classroom setting and utilizes the web to enhance delivery of the course content.

We provide students who enroll in DL courses the capability of completing courses in a flexible online environment, that is, without the limitations of time or location. Enrolling in distance learning gives students flexibility whether your interest is in a course or two, a certificate program, completing a college degree or supplementing your learning endeavors.

You’ll be interested to know that distance learning courses at The University of Toledo are:

  • designed to be equivalent in learning outcomes to their classroom component
  • transferable to other colleges and universities
  • offered at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • may be taken for college credit or audited
  • part of 40 online certificate and degree programs
  • The University of Toledo is the largest provider of online courses amongst Ohio’s four year institutions. UT is accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association and is authorized to offer degrees online.

The University of Toledo’s Division of eLearning and Academic Support has received the “Best Practices in Students Services” designation from the Ohio Learning Network. This designation is awarded to institutions that provide comprehensive information and services for distance learning students as outlined in OLN’s Principles of Best Practices.
