Cardiovascular Technology is a challenging and rewarding career that demands individual initiative, clinical judgement, critical thinking and a commitment to ongoing professional development in a rapidly evolving field.
Cardiovascular Technology is a vibrant field - continuing to expand its influence on the diagnosis and management of patients with peripheral vascular and heart disease.
The profession of cardiovascular technology was first recognized by the American Medical Association in 1982. The educational guidelines for cardiovascular technology were approved and adopted in 1985. Cardiovascular Technologists are qualified by specialized training and education to perform established cardiovascular diagnostic and therapeutic procedures with a physician order. Over the years, the cardiovascular practice has grown and the University of Toledo is proud to offer a program to help fill the cardiovascular sonographer work force shortage.
Working closely with family physicians, cardiologists and vascular surgeons, are Cardiovascular Technologists. The profession is a multi-disciplinary science comprised of Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, Vascular Technology and other emerging fields. These diverse specialties are distinguished by their use of diagnostic medical ultrasound as a primary technology in their daily work. They perform one or a combination of examinations that determine the extent and location of disease or trauma of the cardiovascular system. Recording patients' history and the results of the prescribed examinations for the physician to review is a very important and integral aspect of this career.
The Cardiovascular Professionals are qualified by professional credentialing (ARDMS or CCI) and academic and clinical experience to provide diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. The Scope of Practice of the Diagnostic Ultrasound Professional (SDMS) includes those procedures, acts and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education and clinical experiences, and in which he/she has demonstrated competency.
**Individuals interested in the cardiovascular program of study need to be aware of the ARDMS Procedure for Pre-application Interpretation of Rules Involving Criminal Matters: ARDMS rules provide that ARDMS may take action against an applicant or registrant in the case of the conviction, plea of guilty, or plea of nolo contendere to a crime (felony and/or misdemeanor) which is directly related to public health or the provision of diagnostic medical sonography or vascular technology services. Individuals who have concerns about this rule should contact the ARDMS directly.
The cardiovascular program at The University of Toledo is a CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) accredited program. Thus, qualified graduates can sit for the registry exam upon graduation.
