I. OVERVIEW
The health care administration program at UT provides students with the knowledge and skills to manage as a health care professional. Students learn how to manage in health care organizations, how to deal with personnel, and how to interpret and comply with laws that affect healthcare providers, administrators and organizations. Course work in organizational, information systems and financial management are combined with human relations and health care issues to provide the student with a comprehensive set of skills for advancing in the profession of health care administration.
The health care field is a growing and expanding profession. It is likely that there will continue to be a demand and promising career opportunities for knowledgeable, skilled professionals in a variety of health care settings. Graduates prepare themselves for administrative positions in hospitals, long term care, and outpatient facilities, physician offices, mental health organizations, insurance companies, public health agencies, and other types of health organizations. Our program also prepares students who wish to seek their Master’s degree at some point in their career, often an important consideration for those eventually seeking senior health care executive positions.
II. HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATION – THREE PROGRAM CHOICE
Students interested in health care administration have the following three choices to consider, depending on their interests and backgrounds:
1. Four-Year Program
Students can enroll in this program in their freshman year. Upon completion of the program, the student receives the Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Care Administration and a General Minor in Business (see curriculum).
2. Four-Year Program (Concentration In Long-Term Care)
Students who have a special interest in long term care administration have the opportunity to enroll in the above four year program, but take specific elective long term care related courses in the junior and senior years. Upon completion of the program, the student receives the Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Care Administration (concentration in long term care), and a General Minor in Business (see curriculum). Following graduation, the student must complete a nine month administrative internship in a long term care facility to be eligible to sit for the Ohio nursing home administrator’s license examination.
3. 2 + 2 Year Program
Students who enroll in the 2 + 2 year program must have an associate’s degree in a health related field. Students who select this program are often already gainfully employed in the health care field (nurses, respiratory therapists, etc.). They wish to further their education to better prepare themselves for administrative positions. Upon completion of the program, the student receives the Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Care Administration (see curriculum). If the student also enrolls in specific elective business courses, he/she can also concurrently earn a General Minor in Business (see curriculum).
