Service Learning in the Community

The Office of Service Learning and Community Engagement (OSCLE) partners with community agencies to provide coordination for projects and to organize single service events like Make-A-Difference Day or Rockets to Service.  We work to connect interested faculty and students with the community agencies interested in working with them so that they can perform meaningful service.

Community Partners & Issue-Based Communities
We held our first community agency meeting in Spring 2007 in order to promote better communication between the university and the community. This group reccomended the formation of an Advisory Committee for continuing development. On Monday November 5th more than 40 agencies attended an issue-based community session to start the process of forming an advisory committee.

For more information about the schedules and progress of the issue-based communities please go to: Issue Based Communities.

Please contact our office (servicelearning@utoledo.edu) if you are interested in becoming part of this effort.

Community Based Learning Center
The University of Toledo Office of Service-Learning and Community Engagement,  United North and Toledo Public Schools have partnered together to create a Community Based Learning Center at Woodward High School. The Community Based Learning Center will provide a sustainable space for UT faculty and students to work with Toledo area organizations, engage in service-learning courses in the community, and meet critical community needs.  Through the University of Toledo’s Great Cities, Great Service grant, NorthRiver’s Weed and Seed network has connected 89 Woodward students to service learning projects in the community.  Among other projects, students from the high school and from the university have been working together to implement a North Toledo Neighborhood Survey, including businesses, residents, teachers, and students, in an effort to discover the assets of the community and how to best utilize those assets.

We are planning to celebrate this partnership and these service activities with the community, and invite North Toledo residents, students, parents, and teachers to attend.  This event will be at the Woodward High School Auditorium, on Wednesday, February 6th, 2008 from 3:30pm-5:00pm. There will be refreshments served afterward. Please contact the University of Toledo Office of Service Learning & Community Engagement for more information or to RSVP to attend the event.

Want to get involved with the Universityof Toledo?
If you would like to get university students involved in your organization, either for a longer term project or a single event, please contact our office.  We can make your opportunities available to students through the Service Learning Community (small groups, monthly service), our Work-Study program (single students, regular volunteers), M3C (single students, regular volunteers), or to classes (large group semester projects).  Please contact our office with questions or to learn what opportunities available.
