Service Learning Community
Community service-learning occurs when students participate in a meaningful service experience that benefits the community.  Engaging in active reflection focusing on what students learned throughout their service experience is what differentiates service-learning from community service.  The service-learning reflection consists of three layers – a mirror to reflect on the self, a microscope to focus on the society that is lived in, and binoculars to see what lies ahead.

What is the Service-Learning Community Floor Program in the Residence Halls?

Students who are interested in participating in the Community Service-Learning Floor Program have the opportunity to live with a small group of residents who work on various service projects throughout the semester.  Each group is led by a Student Ambassador who has previously lived on the floor and helps with the organizational aspects of the project.  In addition, faculty mentors participate in each small group and assist with reflection activities.  A minimum of 3 hours of service each month is required to remain a member of the program.

The main service sites for 2007-2008 are as follows where the students on the service learning floor have already completed 244 hours of service and 106 hours of reflection

  • Toledo Metroparks
  • Ronald McDonald House
  • Toledo Museum of Art
  • Toledo Repertoire Theater
  • COSI
  • Josina Lott
  • Toledo Food Bank

What Past Participants Have to Say about the Service-Learning Community...

      Katie, Junior Pharmacy Major
“Service has never been so fun!  The floor programs aided me in making new friendships.  It has also allowed me to have a great leadership experience as a Peer Facilitator.”

      Matt, Freshman Pharmacy Major
“The service we did was rewarding and easily fit into my class schedule.  It was satisfying to see smiles on the faces of the people we served.”

      Amanda, Freshman Bio-engineering Major
“The program was very fulfilling.  I learned a lot about myself and others.  I would recommend that incoming students participate on the floor.”

Darren, Freshman Computer Science Engineering Major
“Although engineering is a very time consuming major, it’s important to include extracurricular activities like the service floor.  I was able to manage both.”

Alexa, Freshman Early Childhood Education Major
“I enjoyed the floor.  It has helped not only because it is related to my future career, but it has been a great opportunity to meet people.  It’s a lot of fun and a very welcoming environment to newcomers.”
