The University, comprised of the Main Campus and Health Science Campus, received more than $60M in fiscal year 2006 in external awards for research and sponsored programs.
In the new Carnegie classification system, UT’s Main campus has been classified as a comprehensive doctoral, high undergraduate, research university with high research activity, while the Health Science Campus has been classified as an exclusively graduate and professional special focus institution comprised of medical schools and centers.
The areas of research excellence for The University include Environmental Impacts on Health, Energy Sustainability and Conservation, Translational Interfaces of Health Sciences, Engineering and Clinical Care, Public Engagement, Regional Economic Revitalization and Global Competitiveness, Science and Technology Education, Health Care Delivery Systems, and Search for Origins.The Research enterprise at UT is managed through two offices: Research Administration and Research Development.
Research Administration, under the direction of Vice President Doug Wilkerson, oversees the submission and tracking of grant proposals to external sources, the administration and reporting of awards, and all regulatory compliance issues for sponsored research.
Research Development, under the direction of Vice President Frank J. Calzonetti, manages Technology Transfer, Intellectual Property, commercialization, and economic development as well as seed grants for faculty.
